[Portable Pumps Review] Pumpables Milk Genie Plus vs Spectra 9s+

Thursday 26 November 2020

One of the things breastfeeding mummies have to prepare when going back to work is a good portable pump! It is important to get one that can clear you milk thoroughly so you do not end up having clogged ducts during work! I got a Spectra 9S+ pump but the suction wasn't strong enough for me and I didn't feel empty even after pumping for 40 minutes each side when I tested it at home. Since the SuperGenie was working better than the Spectra S1+ for me, I thought to give the Pumpables Milk Genie Plus a try too! I have to say this is the best pump I own and I would highly recommend this to all mummies cause it is portable yet it gives me the same yield as the Spectra S1 which is hospital grade! Pumpables Milk Genie Plus

The Pumpables Milk Genie Plus is a portable dual pump. Though it seems like an Australian brand, it was actually founded in Singapore! It is retailed at SGD258 but currently at SGD207 before 10% discount with promo code "SHOP10-KATELYNTAN" and comes with 2 years warranty. Below are the technical specifications:

• Modes: Massage or Expression
• Cycle Speed:
   - for massage mode: 1 setting, 71 CPM
   - for expression mode: 3 settings, 24 to 70 CPM
• Vacuum Strength: Up to 300mmHg
• Size: 95(W) x 49(D) x 132(H) mm
• Weight: 220g

Tip: To change the cycle speed for expression mode (you should hear a difference in cycle speed):
1. Press the droplet to go to expression mode.
2. Press and hold plus sign to increase cycle speed.
3.Press and hold minus sign to reduce cycle speed.
Spectra 9s+

The Spectra 9s+ is another portable dual pump manufactured by a korean brand. It is priced at SGD299 or discount at $195 for local set with 2 years warranty or SGD100+ for korean set without warranty sold on Qoo10. For the comparison chart I will feature the local set since many do buy it locally. Below are the technical specifications:

• Modes: Massage or Expression
• Cycle Speed:
   - for massage mode: 1 setting, 70 CPM
   - for expression mode: 10 settings, 30 to 46 CPM
• Vacuum Strength: Up to 300mmHg
• Size: 72(W) x 47(D) x 122(H) mm
• Weight: 297g

Similarities:
Both the Pumpables Milk Genie Plus and Spectra 9S+ are easy to use plug and play closed system dual pumps with lighted led display screens. The prices are also similar if we compare local sets. Korean Spectra sets are cheaper but they do not come with warranty and you need an adapter to charge.

Differences:
The Pumpables Milk Genie Plus is hands down the better pump. The Milk Genie Plus is way more efficient and comfortable. I only use the massage mode when I pump and since they both have a fixed cycle speed of about 70, I like the Pumpables Milk Genie Plus more has it has 10 levels of suction strength for me to choose from, compared to 5 levels for the Spectra 9S+.

The breastshield size for Spectra 9S+ is fixed at 28mm which is too big for many mummies. I knew my breastshield size before getting these portable pumps. But I really like how the Pumpables Milk Genie Plus comes with 3 different universal breastshields sizes - 21mm, 24mm and 27mm so you can trial and error without having to buy extra breastshields.

As for milk supply, I did a test using 3 days average to compare and Pumpables Milk Genie Plus was able to give me the same yield as a hospital grade pump! I was really amazed cause when I was using Spectra 9S+, my supply was always about 10 to 20% lower. So if you are only getting one pump, I would highly recommend that you get the Pumpables Milk Genie Plus since it is portable yet is able to express the same yield as a hospital grade pump!

Lastly, Pumpables Milk Genie Plus is very convenient to use cause of its memory function, you can save a pump to memory so you need not keep toggling during pumps! This is something that Spectra does not offer.

Similar to the Hospital Grade Pump Review, here's a comparison chart of the portable Pumpables Milk Genie Plus and Spectra 9S+ to make things easier for you to understand!

Hope this helps those who cannot decide between the Pumpables Milk Genie Plus and Spectra 9S+! Note: For mummies who are thinking of switching pumps, do give your body a week or two to get used to the new pump.

  1. I am using S9 plus the suction is very weak. Have you use Genie advanced before? I would like to know if the big and small pump give you the same yield.

    1. Hello! Yes, I have the Genie advanced too. The suction is stronger than S9. Both Super Genie and Genie Advanced gives me roughly the same yield, maybe about 10% more from the Super Genie? But cause of convenience, I end up using the Genie Advanced a lot more.

    2. Hi Katelyn, where in Singapore can you buy this right now?

    3. Hello! I don't think they ship to Singapore anymore. You can consider buying from their USA site and use a 3rd party forwarder to ship to Singapore. It will be quite a hassle to buy parts though. What I do now is I use the pump with spectra handsfree cups. Hope that helps!

  2. Hi Katelyn! Do you know what's the difference between the Genie Plus and Genie Advanced? I think the former is an older model?

    1. Hello :) Genie Advanced (GA) is an upgraded and newer model of Genie Plus (GP). They both pretty much work the same to me. One pro of GA is that it comes with a belt clip and and a pause button, which is really useful. I also find GP's suction a little more gentle, and I cannot go as high up in power for GA.
